The subject of Geography at Codnor Primary School reflects the purposeful journey for the whole child, equipping our pupils with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in all aspects of life, both inside and outside of the classroom. It takes our children on a journey which provides opportunities for them to develop skills and knowledge - both academic and personal - which will ensure that success is achievable for all, regardless of circumstance.
At Codnor Primary School, we value the development of the whole child. Our children are not just learners - they are explorers, investigators, enthusiasts, performers, decision makers, contributors, creators, role models, members of society, and ultimately the future of our community and the world beyond it. In Geography, we relish building the geographers of the future! Geography at Codnor Primary School promotes children’s curiosity and understanding of diversity in our world, in relation to places, people, resources and natural and human environments, alongside nurturing their deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We ignite pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world we live in, and through their journey studying Geography, help them to understand the relationships between the physical features of places and the human activity within them. At Codnor, we hold our local community in high esteem. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Codnor and Derbyshire, so that they can develop of real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special.
We encourage our students to think, act and speak like those working in a geographical field would: to research thoroughly, to collect and analyse data, to use maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to develop their knowledge of our world and to communicate their knowledge in different ways: skills which are invaluable to their future lives in education and beyond. Our carefully structured Geography curriculum provides opportunities additional to the NC endpoints, to build cultural capital and, through exposure in Geography lessons to life-skills such as British Values, the diversity of the world and spiritual, moral, cultural and social development, enable pupils to become well-rounded members of society in preparation for later life.
Aims:
Through our in-depth and carefully sequenced lessons, pupils’ geographical skills and concepts are transferable to whichever period of geography is being studied and will equip pupils for both their future learning and future life.
These key geographical skills and concepts are:
Our pupils leave Codnor Primary School with the knowledge to think like a geographer, act like a geographer and speak like a geographer and they value the transference of these skills into their every day life, in education and beyond.
