This symbol shows the child that a new paragraph should have started somewhere on the line where the symbol is placed. New paragraphs can begin when the subject of the writing changes, to show that the following events happen at a different time/place, or (when writing dialogue) to show that a different character is speaking.
The child responds by writing a paragraph symbol // at the point where a new paragraph should have started.
