Go Ride Cycle Race Individual Event Wednesday 23rd May, 4-5.30pm, Kilburn Junior School. The first Go Ride race of the year took place on a warm afternoon at Kilburn Junior School. We had 6 boys from years 4 & 5 and 1 girl from year 3 competing, some of whom for the first time. All the children had to compete in a heat and then an ‘A’ or ‘B’ final to achieve a final position with points awarded on position – 38 boys in the race therefore 1st place scores 38 points. Our boys finished in 32nd, 27th, 25th, 17th, Riley Nelson in 5th and Troy Cooper in 2nd respectively whilst our only girl, a year 3 competing against children up to 3 years older than her finished in 11th out of 19 riders. There was lots of passion and determination shown by all riders and some really fantastic results, well done to all the riders and a big thank you to parents for getting their children there with their bikes. KS1 Football Competition, Tuesday 22nd May, 4-5.30pm, Aldercar High School. Our year 2 boys went along to the KS1 Football Competition at Aldercar High on Tuesday night on a lovely sunny afternoon. They played 6 games altogether, 3 in the first group stage in which they drew 0-0 with Heanor Langley and won 1-0 and 3-0 against Coppice Primary and Langley Mill Infants respectively. This meant that we progressed to the top 4 to play off for the chance to win the competition. We came up against Coppice Primary once again who we beat 1-0 in a close game but then we lost 3-0 to the eventual champions Corfield Infants before drawing 1-1 with Richardson Primary to finish as runners up overall. The boys did themselves and the school proud with the way they played and behaved throughout the afternoon. They also looked fantastic in their brand new kit sponsored by Jacksdale MOT Centre which was provided to us by Owen Oxley and Full Reptile Collective. Big thanks to all parents who came along to support too!

Y5/6 Hi5 Netball Finals, Thursday 3rd May, 4-5.45pm, Alfreton Leisure Centre. As expected this was a step up in challenge on the Aldercar competition as the best schools from Amber Valley were in attendance. That being said our team still performed admirably to draw our first game against Belper St Johns 0-0. After this we came up against very good teams in Denby Free and Riddings Junior against whom we were well beaten but it was a good experience for the team to have. The commitment they have shown to get better at the game is a great example to others, well done!

Y3-6 Cross Country, Tuesday 24th April, 4-5.15pm, Shipley Park, Heanor. On a miserable, rainy Tuesday 16 of our children from Y3-6 visited Shipley Park to compete in the AVSSP Cross Country competition. We had many great runners competing, some of whom who had finishes in the top 10 and top 20 in their race category, which led to us finishing 7th overall on the night. However in the Y3/4 Boys race Addison Howe finished in a fantastic 1st place, winning by some distance to continue the run of Codnor winners at a cross country competition to 3 consecutive years. Brilliant running by all and a massive thanks to parents for braving the awful weather conditions to taxi and support all the children.

Y5/6 Netball Aldercar Champions Tuesday 17th April, 4-5.45pm, Aldercar High School. All but one of the children attending this year’s Netball competition played in the team last year and this experience showed as we performed brilliantly on the night. We comprehensively beat Langley Mill Junior 5-1 before beating the reigning champions Loscoe Primary 1-0 in a tight game. The children played some fantastic netball and were understandably delighted as many of them have been to various competitions throughout their school life and it was nice for them to have a big success before they leave school in July. They would go on to represent school at the Borough Finals in May. Well done to the Netball team!

Y3/4 Mini Tennis Finals Thursday 12th April, Ecclesbourne School, Duffield, 4-5.30pm – The third consecutive year we have made it to the Mini Tennis Finals but again it proved to be a big step up in challenge. The team went along and played 7 games of tennis each against good opponents and still managed to come away with some wins in a tricky competition. We finished 4th overall with Riddings Junior finishing as Borough Champions, but we have to remember that 4th is out of all the schools in Amber Valley, so a big well done to the tennis team!
Y3-6 Gymnastics, Tuesday 20th March, Alfreton Leisure Centre, 4-5.45pm – In our second gymnastics competition in as many days we had two teams performing on the same night. Our year 5/6 girls went along to perform the two routines they had practised as well as their vault on Tuesday, but their competition wasn’t until Thursday. Unfortunately this clashed with our school disco which left us with only half a team to compete on the Tuesday and, whilst the girls performed excellently, they could never compete for first place as they could only score half marks. Well done for your commitment and a fantastic performance girls. In contrast the year 3/4 team who attended the competition were a full squad of 6 and were very much competitive. They all performed their floor exercise, body management routine and vaults to a very high standard to give themselves a fantastic chance of winning on the night. When it came to the announcement of the champions there were just 3.25 points in it between 1st and 2nd, with Codnor finishing narrowly behind Breadsall Primary Aces. Disappointing not to win but a superb result for the school with every child doing themselves and the school proud, well done to our Gymnastics teams!
KS1 Gymnastics Monday 19th March, Alfreton Leisure Centre, 4-5.45pm – Our KS1 Gymnastics Team won this competition for the second year running to make this our most successful year in AVSSP competitions to date. The 7 girls who went along to compete had to learn two routines and a vault to perform at the competition. The girls performed fantastically well in all elements to finish joint 1st with Waingroves on 89 points – fantastic gymnastics from all involved – well done girls!

Y3/4 Mini Tennis, Tuesday 21st March, William Gregg Leisure Centre, 4-5.45pm – Our tennis team won this competition to become AVSSP Mini Tennis Champions for the third year running with some terrific tennis. All four players won at least 4 games each which helped to send us through to the Tennis Finals in April. Well done team, we are very proud of you, and good luck in the finals!

KS1 Rackets Festival, Tuesday 6th, William Gregg Leisure Centre, 4-5.30pm – In the end 7 of our children attended this event aimed at improving children’s basic tennis knowledge and skills. Those children who attended were helped to improve their underarm throwing and catching skills, their racket skills and their hitting skills. Eventually this led to them playing rallies against the leaders from Heanor Gate with some of our children showing excellent control and skill with their hitting. Well done to all who attended the event!

Y4/5 Table Tennis, Tuesday 13th February, Aldercar Community Language College, 4-5.45pm – We took along 4 children who had never played competitive table tennis before to this competition and it was a great experience for them. All 4 children had some excellent wins playing great table tennis but also came up against some well-trained opponents who had clearly played a lot more. Despite this we managed a respectable 5th place finish out of 7 teams attending and were close to being higher placed. Great effort by all children and thanks to Mr. Howe for his support.

Y3/4 Dodgeball Competition Tuesday 6th February, William Gregg Leisure Centre, Heanor 4-5.45pm – We took along two teams – 13 children in all – to the first official AVSSP Dodgeball Competition. Our two teams played some fantastic dodgeball with great teamwork and sportsmanship displayed by every player. In the end our ‘A’ team finished in 2nd place in the first group stage and so advanced to the top 6 playoff whilst our ‘B’ team finished 6th to progress to the 7-12 place playoff. Our ‘B’ team improved greatly in the second stage with some great catches meaning they finished 8th overall. Whilst our ‘A’ team had some great wins and some narrow defeats to finish joint 3rd overall with Howitt Primary worthy champions. Well done to all and thanks for fantastic support from everyone.
Y5/6 Girls Futsal Tuesday 23rd January, Alfreton Leisure Centre, 4-5.45pm – As one of only 5 teams at this competition the girls had the opportunity to play 8 games of futsal. I have got to say they were quite possibly the most unlucky team I have ever taken to a competition. In only 2 of the games were they really outplayed, putting in excellent effort, tremendous teamwork and great passing skills and they never gave up. Despite this they registered no wins during the competition – what can I say but better luck next time girls you were amazing!
Y5/6 Boys Futsal Thursday 18th January, Alfreton Leisure Centre, 4-5.45pm – 7 boys went along this competition for the first time. Overall they finished 4th out of the 6 teams with 2-0 wins over Leys Junior and Ironville and Codnor Park Primary. Unfortunately they lost unluckily 2-0 to Riddings Junior; a very tight 1-0 defeat against Mundy Junior; and a 3-0 defeat Heage Primary.

Y5/6 Football Competitions – Tuesday 16th, 23rd January and 30th January, William Gregg Leisure Centre, Heanor, 4-6pm – We believe the football team finished in a very respectable 5th place out of the 9 teams in this Heanor competition – exactly mid-table – although we haven’t received a finalised table. The boys finished the competition with a combination of convincing and tight wins, but also some tight defeats. Again Mr. Buckle was very pleased with the effort and teamwork of all the boys involved – well done lads!

Y5/6 Basketball Finals Tuesday 9th January, Aldercar Community Language College, 4-5.45pm – The 8 best teams in the borough battled it out to be AVSSP Basketball Borough Champions, therefore this was a step up in challenge for our team. In the first game they played the eventual champions, Belper St Johns and we were well beaten. After this game we played some good quality Basketball beating Fritchley Primary before losing narrowly to Heage Primary 4-2 (2 baskets to 1). This left us in the 5th/6th playoff game against Shirland Primary, with the game tight for long periods we eventually lost 8-4 meaning a 6th place finish – 6th in Amber Valley out of the 34 teams in the entire competition. Well done to the whole team you did the school proud!

Y5/6 Football Competitions, Tuesday 5th December, William Gregg Leisure Centre, Heanor, 4-6pm – After starting with a tight 2-1 defeat to Waingroves ‘A’ the team recovered well to comprehensively beat Langley Mill ‘B’ 6-0 and to edge a tight game against Langley Mill ‘B’ 2-1.

Tuesday 12th December – In the final two fixtures before Christmas the boys had tough matches. The first against Mundy ‘A’ was a tight game, with the boys coming back from 2 goals down only to be beaten late on with the final score 4-3 to Mundy ‘A’. In the second game against Loscoe the final score of 4-1 to Loscoe did not do the boys justice but they battled well. They head into the Christmas Break with a record of won 3 - lost 5. With 8 more games to play in the New Year there is lots still to play for. Mr Buckle has been very impressed with determination and teamwork amongst the boys with some great performances. Well done to the Football team!

AVSSP Dance Platform, David Nieper Academy 14 of our Year 3-6 children went along to showcase the dances they have been practicing at school. We had 3 soloists, one duet and two girl groups, all of whom were fantastic to watch! Well done to all the girls who took part!
AVSSP Year 3/4 Handball Competition, William Gregg Leisure Centre, Heanor We took along two teams for our first ever year 3/4 Handball competition. Both teams played 8 games against other schools from Amber Valley, including one against each other, to decide who would be overall champions. Both teams played some fantastic Handball, scoring lots of goals and improving with every game. Overall our teams finished in 5th and 8th, whilst this could have been better (especially for our 'A' team who snatched draws and defeats from the jaws of victory) we are still very proud of the children who participated.
AVSSP Year 5/6 Basketball Runners Up, Aldercar Community Language College We're very proud of our Y5/6 basketball team who, on Tuesday night, finished a fantastic second place in the AVSSP Basketball Competition at Aldercar. They were narrowly beaten in the final by Richardson Primary - nevertheless, they will progress to the borough finals after Christmas. Well done to all who participated and a big thank you to parents for supporting! Special thumbs up to Mandy White - thanks very much!
AVSSP KS1 Handball, William Gregg Leisure Centre, Heanor Our first ever KS1 Handball Competition ended with a creditable 4th place finish out of the 9 teams who attended. In the first group we played against Loscoe and Heanor langley, beating Heanor Langley but losing to Loscoe meaning a 2nd place finish in the group. We moved on to the 4th-6th place playoff next, against Langley Mill Infant and Howitt Primary, and our team stepped up their game and beat both teams with some fantastic goals. Well done to the Handball Team!
AVSSP Year 5/6 Elite Tag Rugby Third Place, Belper Rugby Club On a cold afternoon ten of our children attended this competition amongst the best 8 schools in Amber Valley. In the first stage of the competition we were up against Mundy Junior, Duffield Meadows ‘A’ and Leys. We won 2 of these games, only losing out to a very good Duffield team meaning we finished 2nd in this group and moved into the semi-final stage to play Belper St Johns as we did last year in the quarter finals. Overall we finished 3rd after losing to Belper St Johns but beating Swanwick in a fantastic 3rd/4th playoff in which we came back from 6-4 down to win 7-6. The children gave it their all and played well as a team throughout the competition showing great respect for their opponents in all the games! Well done to all players and thanks to supporters.
AVSSP Half Term 1 Champion Schools Standings A new competition for this year, Champion Schools rewards schools for their participation primarily whilst also awarding points for finishing in the top 3 places of a competition. We have had a good start to the year and we hope to be in the top 3 positions in both the Medium School and Infant School catergories come the end of the year.
AVSSP Sportshall Athletics Plus, Alfreton Leisure Centre This event was aimed at children who do not normally participate in school sport to build their confidence and self-esteem, hopefully encouraging them to participate more often. The 6 children who went along had a great time, showing great enjoyment and did their very best in all the events, cheering each other along all the way.
AVSSP Year 3/4 Sportshall Medium School Champions, Alfreton Leisure Centre As one of 14 teams the children did themselves and the school extremely proud! We finished 1st overall with some fantastic field events and great performances in the relays scoring 1410 points – 160 more than 2nd place. We showed a great team spirit with every member doing their bit in a buzzing Alfreton Leisure Centre and we hope this will be the start of things to come with regards success in competitions. Fantastic Athletics!
AVSSP Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Medium Schools, Alfreton Leisure Centre As one of 14 teams at a busy competition the children did themselves and the school extremely proud! The children competed in the same events as the KS1 children but against opposition from the whole Amber Valley Borough. Every child was excellent on the night and we finished 6th overall, only 70 points behind 4th place. A good result for the school – well done to all who attended!

KS1 Sportshall Champions

Starting the competition we were looking to retain the winner’s trophy after finishing a fantastic first place last year. The children put in a tremendous amount of effort and showed great skill and enjoyment during the Speed Bounce, Standing Long Jump and Chest Throw events and dominated in the relay races. They scored 1000 points and eventually finished 1st out of the 8 schools winning by 350 points! A fantastic achievement for all those children who competed keeping up our successful streak!

AVSSP Year 5/6 Football, Eyes Meadow, Duffield This was a mixed competition to which we took along 10 boys. We played four games with a group format up first. In the first game we were outplayed by a good Kilburn side, losing 2-0. In the second game we were very unlucky to draw 0-0 with Mundy ‘C’, having numerous shots cleared off the line. In the final game we deservedly beat William Gilbert 1-0 to finish joint 2nd in the group and 2nd overall due to our win over William Gilbert leaving us with a better head to head record. We went on to lose 1-0 to Belper St Johns in our final game meaning a top 8 finish. All the boys did their best on the day and will have lots more opportunities to play in the year ahead.
AVSSP Year 5/6 Girls Football, Eyes Meadow, Duffield We took 7 girls along to a rainy 6-a-side competition for the first time for two years. The girls who went along played 4 games – the first game against Horsley Primary was a 0-0 draw which could have gone either way; the second was a narrow 2-1 defeat to Muggington Primary; the last game was a 5-0 defeat against Mundy ‘A’. We then played a friendly match against Mundy ‘B’ which we were winning 1-0 until the last seconds when Mundy equalised. The girls did a fantastic job, playing really well as a team and this hopefully inspired some of them to go along to the local club to play
