During lockdown the children were tasked with making their own crazy golf holes and course - they were given a bank of resources and allowed to get creating. The children were fantastic at using their Crystal Creator skills to design their holes using great teamwork. After the children had finished creating the course we all had a go at playing and it was great fun.
Derbyshire School Games are running virtual competitions throughout lockdown and golf was one of these competitions so we decided to enter our school and we received great news that we had won and we received a £200 voucher to buy new equipment for the school.
So thank you to Derbyshire School Games and Amber Valley School Sports Partnership for running and promoting the competitions and well done to the children on your fantastic golf creator skills!
Tuesday 14th January, 4-5.45, Alfreton Leisure Centre.
7 of our boys went along to play in the Futsal competition against teams from Riddings Junior, Ripley Junior, Belper St Johns and Leys Junior. All teams would play one another twice across the competition with a league format to decide the eventual champions.
The boys played some fantastic futsal to win games against Riddings 1-0 twice; against Ripley 3-0 and 2-0; and against Leys 2-0 twice, with precision passing, determined defending and super shooting, not to mention top class goalkeeping from Layton too! This left us with Belper St Johns as our direct rivals to win the competition.
In the first game we played against them we were 1-0 down about half way through the game with an unfortunate deflected goal from a corner, but the boys battled back to score in similar fashion to draw level, only for Belper to score late on to win the game. By the time we came to play against Belper again they had drawn one game, meaning that if we could beat them we could win the competition. The game was tight once again and we had an early chance to take the lead but unfortunately shot wide. Layton once again kept us in the game with some super saves only for Belper to score from a corner in a similar fashion to the first game. The boys battled hard but couldn't find an equaliser which left Belper top of the league overall and us in the runners-up spot but very proud of our achievement - well done boys!
Tuesday 3rd December, William Gregg Leisure Centre, Heanor, 4-5.45pm.
On Tuesday night we took along two handball teams, a year 3 and a year 4 team, both looking to win this competition for the first time for our school. Our year 3 team would play games against Mundy 'A', Langley Mill and Richardson, drawing 3-3 against Langley Mill and losing the other 2 games, whilst showing improvement every game. This meant that they would playoff for 10th place, which they did successfully with wins against 2 teams from Langley Mill.
Our year 4 team were grouped with Mundy 'B', Marlpool and Langley Mill and they were fantastic in their game play winning all 3 games with great attacking and defending skills and fantastic teamwork. This meant that they would progress to playoff for the chance to win the competition against Mundy 'A' and Denby. In the first game we took a 3-0 lead but were then pegged back to 3-2 before scoring two penalties to make it 5-2. Mundy scored again to make it a nervous end but we ended the game 5-3 winners. Mundy then beat Denby meaning we knew that a draw would be good enough to win the competition, which we did in style with a convincing 5-2 win against Denby.
The children were rightly delighted with their success, but were still good sports as they shook hands, and even tried to console one of Denby's team who was upset at their defeat. The win continues our fantastic start to the year, having now won 4 competitions, and we just hope we can continue this amazing success for 2020!
Tuesday 26th November, Aldercar High School, 4-5.30pm.
On Tuesday night 6 of our Y5/6 children went along to Aldercar High School to participate in the AVSSP Basketball competition. After finishing as runners-up in the last two years we were determined to go one better this year and win the competition.
The team started brilliantly, beating Langley Mill 10-0 in the first game and Mundy 'B' 4-0 in the second. Moving into the final two games we knew it would be tougher as we had to play Howitt first, the team who beat us in two finals last year, but this year they were no match for our aggressive basketball as we ran out 4-0 winners once again.
In the final game we faced Mundy 'A', who had also won all of their games, which essentially made this a final, and what a final it was. We started nervously, gifting Mundy an early basket, but this got our players going and a great basket from Jayden Davis drew us level to settle the nerves. The game was end to end from here on in with both teams playing great basketball with some great steals and interceptions. With 45 seconds to go Mundy scored and it looked like we would be defeated once again in the final, but our team showed great resilience to draw level with a superb basket from the irrepressible Sam Reeves. Therefore the game went to overtime, as we had done in our last two basketball finals (which we lost), but this year Tom Long stepped up to score the winning basket!
It was a fantastic team performance in which everyone contributed and every player showed great teamwork, commitment and resilience to finally come through and win the competition. We are immensely proud of the team and all children who attend these competitions as they always give it their all, whilst showing great sportsmanship and fair play. The team will go on to play in the basketball finals in two weeks and try and do it all again.
Tuesday 15th October, Alfreton Leisure Centre, 4-6pm.
A week after our year 5/6 children were crowned champions it was the year 3 and 4s turn. We had 14 children in our team, with 2 girls at their first ever competition, but every single one of them performed brilliantly. We started the competition on Speed Bounce with everyone scoring 30 or more, which was a fantastic start, and this was followed by some brilliant Chest Push Throws and super Standing Long Jumps to give us a great score in the field events.
We moved on to the relay races next with the boys finishing the obstacle race in 1st place and the girls in 3rd place which was an excellent start. In the hurdle and sprint races, both boys and girls performed brilliantly, finishing the races in the top 4 leaving us with an excellent chance of winning.
When it came to the results we were left in the top 3 and we were told that there was 40 points between 1st and 3rd place - in the end we were delighted to find out we would be crowned champions for the 2nd time in a week leaving us extremely proud of our athletics teams for 2019! Well done to our teams and to all our staff and parents who have supported along the way.
Tuesday 8th October, Alfreton Leisure Centre, 4-6pm.
Our year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics team were hoping to win the competition and be the first Codnor Y5/6 Champions in the event. They would first compete in field events of Chest Push Throw, Standing Long Jump and Speed Bounce. Our children performed brilliantly in all of these events with many personal bests - 2 of our children jumping over 2 metres in the Standing Long Jump which was outstanding!
After the field events we moved on to the relays, with both teams performing brilliantly in the obstacle relay - the boys finishing 1st and girls 2nd. In the hurdle race the boys finished 3rd and the girls 2nd again to keep up the good results. In our final competitive race of the night, the sprint, the boys again won their race with the girls finishing 4th leaving us with a great chance of being in the top 3.
When it was announced we had finished 1st the children, staff and parents were delighted with the result! Many of them have worked hard for this event and it was a culmination of many years’ effort as some of the children have competed in the event for 4/5 years in a row! An amazing achievement for some amazing children, you have done yourselves and the school really proud. Well done to all involved!
AVSSP Year 5/6 Basketball Borough Finals 4th Place - Thursday 12th December, 4-5.15, Aldercar High School.
On Thursday evening 5 of our original team went along to play in the borough finals against the other 3 best teams in Amber Valley - who had qualified for the event by winning their respective competitions two weeks previously.
We knew the games we would play would be a tough challenge, and that is exactly how it panned out. In the first game we would play against Belper St Johns and we took the lead early in the first half with a great basket from Jayden Davis. The game was end to end but largely it was Belper pressure but our basket was living a charmed life. At least until late in the second half when Belper finally scored, at which point they got their shooting confidence and scored twice more meaning a 6-2 defeat, with Belper going on to be runners-up eventually.
Next we would play Riddings Junior - the eventual champions - who had some excellent Basketball players and who comprehensively beat us 10-2, despite us being level at 2-2 at one point. This left us with a final game to play against Little Eaton, and in a game which could have gone either way with chances at both ends, it was Little Eaton who finally scored the winning basket late on in the game.
The children were very disappointed understandably but we were proud of how they had performed, playing better as a team as the competition progressed, showing great passion and determination throughout. To finish 4th on the night felt like defeat, but as it was the finals we actually finished 4th out of the 26 teams who entered the competition which is a fantastic achievement, well done team!
Y5/6 ‘Elite’ Tag Rugby Competition - Thursday 24th October, Belper Rugby Club, 4-6pm. On a cold afternoon ten of our children attended this competition amongst the best 12 schools in Amber Valley. In the first stage of the competition we were up against, Duffield Meadows, Crich and Kilburn. We won 2 of these games, only drawing against Duffield Meadows late on, meaning we finished 2nd in this group on tries scored and moved into the 4th/5th/6th play-off to face Leys and Breadsall. In this group we beat a good Leys team before losing to an excellent Breadsall team to finish a very respectable 5th place. The children gave it their all and played well as a team throughout the competition showing great respect for their opponents in all the games! Well done to all players and thanks to parents for their respectful and fantastic support.
Y5/6 Development Rugby Competition - Wednesday 23rd, Belper Rugby Club, 4-6pm. For 9 of our 10 children this was their first rugby competition, and for a couple of the children their first school competition ever. In every game they played some really good rugby, winning the first two games against Leys Junior and Kilburn Junior Schools and losing the next two against strong teams from Muggington and Swanwick Primary Schools. There were some fantastic tries scored and terrific teamwork from all our players, as well as great support from parents, in the end meaning a 5th place finish out of the 16 teams involved, well done team.
Y5/6 Gregg Cup Semi-Final – Friday 18th October, Heanor Town Football Ground, 5pm. This was the second time we have played against Howitt Primary School on a blustery night in what ended up being a fantastic game of football. We took the lead early in the first half, with a calm finish from Addison Howe only for Howitt to equalise almost immediately. The scores could easily have been level at half time but Howitt scored to give them a 2-1 lead heading into the break. In the second half the boys went out to play with a very determined attitude, playing some great passing football. Eventually the pressure we put on Howitt paid off as Tom Long scored a stunning solo goal to set up a great finish. Howitt came back and, despite some great saves from Leo Carter, a scrambled goal in the penalty box gave Howitt a 3-2 lead which, unfortunately, we couldn’t turn around. A very entertaining game of football, which we were disappointed to lose but well done to all involved!
Y3-6 Sportshall Plus - Thursday 17th October, Alfreton Leisure Centre. This event was aimed at children who do not normally participate in school sport to build their confidence and self-esteem, hopefully encouraging them to participate more often. The 6 children who went along had a great time, showing great enjoyment and did their very best in all the events, cheering each other along all the way, well done team.
Y5/6 Football Competition - Thursday 26th September, Eyes Meadow, Duffield, 4-6pm. This was a mixed competition to which we took along 8 boys. We played 5 games altogether, with a group format up first. The team won one game against Kilburn 4-0, drawing the other two against Belper and Mundy, which meant they finished second in their group to progress to the 5th/6th/7th place play-off. We went on to win both games against Swanwick and Riddings to finish 5th overall with all the boys doing their best on the day.
Y5/6 Girls Football Competition - Wednesday 25th September, Eyes Meadow, Duffield, 4-6pm. We took 8 girls along to this 6-a-side competition. The girls who went along played 4 games, losing the first 3 against excellent teams from Kilburn, Loscoe and Riddings, whilst showing fantastic spirit and determination. This was evident in the final game when, after a year of searching for their first win, they finally beat Mundy ‘B’ 1-0 with a super goal. The girls did a fantastic job, finishing 10th overall and playing really well as a team.
